The Advanced Structures and Composites Center, at the University of Maine, has significant expertise in prototype manufacturing and evaluation of wood and wood composites, including structural (OSB and plywood) and non-structural panels (particleboard and fiberboard), structural composite lumber, glulam beams, and cross-laminated timber. This position will be involved with all laboratory activities related to wood composites manufacturing, fabrication and testing of test specimens, as well as development and maintenance of laboratory equipment. This position will also supervise students working in the lab. The typical hiring range for this soft-money position is $40,000 - $50,000 commensurate with qualifications and skills.

  • B.S. in engineering, forestry or material sciences, or equivalent combination of education and experience typically associated with a Bachelor's Degree.
  • Excellent organizational, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with faculty, staff, lab technicians, management, students, and industrial clients.


  • Familiarity with wood and wood composites (manufacturing and end-use application).
  • Hands-on relevant manufacturing experience, preferably in a mill or testing laboratory.
  • Demonstrated experience in data collection software as well as MS Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in conceptual design and design modifications.
  • Trained in safe work practices around power tools and large equipment, and ability to train others in these practices.
